Healthcare is a key vertical for robotics and automation to grow in finding applications ranging from surgery to rehabilitation and post patient care. The market for medical robotics and computer assisted surgical equipment could reach $18 billion in 2022 according to Grand View Research.

Robotic Assisted Surgery

Robotics are already making a big impact in Healthcare with robotic assisted surgical systems such as Intuitive Surgical's Da Vinci System.

This systems takes the input from a surgeon at a console to manipulate robotic arms which can then perform minimally invasive operations on patients. This technique has proven to produce better patient outcomes with faster recovery rates, fewer complications and fewer errors. An estimated 613,000 robot assisted surgeries will take place in 2015.

Robotic Limbs and Exoskeletons

Exoskeletons are one of the most exciting segment of the entire medical robotics market right now. Exoskeleton technology has matured, new arrivals have appeared, and the technology has found widespread acceptance among users and commentators. A 2014 report from market analysts Wintergreen predicts that the rehabilitation robot market (which includes rehab/therapy robots, active prostheses, exoskeletons and wearable robotics) will grow from $43.3 million to $1.8 billion by 2020.

Care Bots and Healthcare Logistics

Other areas in which robotics are expected to have a key impact include healthcare logistics and care-bots which may play an increasing role in countries with rapidly ageing population demographics.
